SHOUT OUT TO MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESS…
Jermaine Edwards, Managing Director, Epic Building Detailers, LLC (MWBE Certified)
Why did you choose a career in the construction industry?
I had an opportunity to work for the Laborers driving a truck. After some time, I injured my back on the job. I was told it would take three to four years to heal and no more laboring. I needed steady work and security for my future. I created my own solution to an obstacle.
What do you love most about your job?
Freedom! I don’t work by anyone else’s clock. I’m able to work with my customers and clients and set my own schedule.
What advice would you give to other people looking at starting their own business in the construction or commercial industries?
Don’t be scared to take a risk. The first couple of years are the hardest. If you need to get a business loan, it can be hard to make those payments. But if you push on and get through the first two years, you’ll be coasting.
How have your life experiences helped you to succeed?
In my early 20’s I managed KFC Restaurants in the Tacoma area. It taught me how business works and how to manage people. It was a great experience that gave me skills and tools I use today in my own business.
What is the coolest project you’ve been a part of and why?
The coolest project I worked on was the King County Justice Center in Seattle, WA. It did a lot for us. It was the biggest project we had to that point, and it did a lot for our business. It was a really big deal. It helped move the business to the next level.
